Fibre Acquisition

Advised WEL Energy regarding the NZ$118m acquisition of the Crown’s minority interest in Ultrafast Fibre, a local fibre company delivering UFB services in the Waikato, Tauranga and Taranaki. A team member advised on all the transaction aspects including leading the negotiations to a successful conclusion.

Water JV Business Case

Developed a new joint venture organisational model and business case for the delivery of water, wastewater and stormwater services across three Waikato councils. A 30 year financial model, governance  structures and operating arrangements were developed. NZ$465m in savings were assessed.

Freight Joint Venture

Advised Kotahi on the negotiation and structuring of a 10 year freight alliance with the Port of Tauranga which has streamlined shipping services to New Zealand. The project also included negotiating a domestic freight joint venture.

Social Bond

Working with partners, developed New Zealand’s first ever social bond in the social services sector. This innovative solution will target a reduction in youth re-offending, bringing together government, not-for-profit and private sector contributions.

Train Procurement

Provided commercial advice to KiwiRail and Auckland Transport on the NZ$460m procurement of 58 electric commuter trains and a new depot. A 35 year whole of life financial model was developed to support the procurement and team members designed and completed the price evaluation process.

Financial Modelling

Developed an integrated, modular forecasting model for the NZ Defence Force to assist them with their Network Enabled Army procurement programme. This will deliver modern communications to NZ’s land forces. The sophisticated model allows the NZDF to test different procurement scenarios, programme sequencing and timing

Andy has over 20 years of corporate finance and advisory experience gained with Cranleigh in New Zealand. Prior to that he worked in a number of senior management positions in the UK including being finance director for a subsidiary of Guinness, a major UK plc.

Recent roles have included advising in the establishment of NZ’s first significant Social Investment Bond, the procurement of the Auckland Electric Trains for KiwiRail and the development of a sophisticated financial forecast framework for the NZ Defence Networked Enabled Army project.

Andy advises on a range of projects including mergers and acquisitions, procurement, financial structuring and financial analysis. His key interests include strategic development, value and performance enhancement, health development and innovative social investment solutions.

Andy is also active in the sports and outdoor sector and co-organises a number of annual events including the ARC Adventure Race, the K2 Cycle Race, and the Great Kauri Run. He is also a trustee of the Spirit of Coromandel, which encourages young people into outdoor activities and the Coromandel Independent Living Trust.

Mike has over 30 years in investment banking and corporate advisory services gained with Cranleigh, Nomura and Citigroup among other appointments in Europe and New Zealand.

In London he assisted major corporations with business development opportunities and debt restructurings. During the 1990’s Mike was appointed by the British government to Poland to assist with the restructuring of a Polish state-owned bank.

On returning to New Zealand he developed and managed his own business interests. He subsequently joined Cranleigh as a director for 11 years, primarily working across infrastructure and mergers & acquisition projects.

Mike advises on a range of projects including mergers and 

acquisitions, joint ventures, financial structuring and business case development. His key interests are strategic development, value enhancement, infrastructure development and negotiations. He is also chair of a private, specialist health services company. 

Mike enjoys the arts, sailing and other outdoor pursuits.
